Marci and I arrived at Paine's Creek in Brewster a few hours before sunset and upon arriving we had a feeling that we were in for a good evening. The air was warm but clear with a very light breeze and soft clouds were on the horizon where the sun would be setting. What we were not expecting was one of the most spectacular sunsets we have seen here on the Cape.
We chose this night because we knew the weather seemed favorable and the tide was going to be low, allowing the tidal flats to be visible. With this being early June and not yet tourist season, there were not many people at the beach that night, and the sea grass was short and fresh.
It has always amazed me how many people head back to their cars to leave just after the sun sets. They will never realize what they are missing. Some 20 minutes after the sun disappeared below the horizon was when this image was captured, with just a handful of the original viewers remaining when the sky exploded with a rainbow of color.
A couple months later, while exhibiting at an art show on the Cape, a customer who had been looking at this piece approached us and, not knowing when this image was created, mentioned they live in Brewster and remembered seeing a sunset just like that a few months ago. They said it was one of the best sunsets they had seen. Once I showed them some additional images from that night, we knew we were all talking about the same evening. Turns out they were one of the few who stayed late...
