Duck Harbor Beach in Wellfleet is one of those "off the beaten path" locations that I love finding and exploring. Located on the bay side of Wellfleet, I was first introduced to this location while photographing on assignment for the Cape Cod Times newspaper. It was winter, and I was following a group of volunteers searching for cold-stunned turtles - turtles that have unintentionally washed ashore in shock and in need of medical attention due to the harsh winter winds and cold temperatures. I had seen some photographic possibilities that day and looked forward to a return trip to photograph not for the newspaper, but for my own creative and inspirational needs.

The image presented above was inspired from that cold walk along the beach. Photographed on a chilly April evening, the cool blue of the sky and water is warmed by a sliver of red, long after the sun set, while some lights from Provincetown are just noticeable on the horizon to the right adding to the warmth. The evening was calm and peaceful, and a gentle lapping of the waves was all one could hear. I used a 20 second exposure to cause the waves to disappear in a fog-like haze, enhancing the mood of the image.

Countless viewers have told me they see turtles instead of rocks in the foreground - making their way to shore the way they should: on their own power, through the fog, and following a setting sun.
