I was hiking along a frozen creek in about 4 inches of snow in Sedona when I came across this enormous canyon wall, stopping me in my tracks. Afternoon sunlight was reflecting off both a yellow rock formation behind me and the snow all around me, softly and beautifully lighting my view.
There was something about this particular canyon wall: the strong vertical lines caused by desert varnish and lichen, the subtle horizontal lines carved into the sandstone by rushing water and wind...Mother Nature had left Her imprint over many, many years of creation - inspiring me to create this photograph.
"Sedona Varnish" is the result of four separate photos that I stitched together by hand. Many hours of work are beautifully represented in the final print. This was done to capture the fine detail that is present in the sandstone.
